Cat lovers are so numerous because there is such diversity in the size, color, and appearance of cats. In addition to the previous reasons, an individual cat's behavior varies from cat to cat. You could get anything from loving to distant, oddball to boring, and numerous other behaviors as well.

Growing up in a household with an insane amount of indoor cats was made fascinating by the variety of personalities the cats possessed. One of the cats, Pansy, was a lovely tricolor cat who was reserved and shy. Pansy took every opportunity possibly to sit on top of our old Encyclopedia Britannica's.

My cats, Eric and Tinker, both have unique qualities. For instance, the clever Tinker could open a trash can by stepping on the push button and could play music on my guitar for hours. Eric was the comforting kitty, loyally by my side during uncomfortable times, although he wasn't always so good about making it to the bathroom.

Cats have individual personalities and some can be quite eccentric! It is important for cat owners to recognize what is "normal" for their cat. For example, it might be normal for your cat to insanely run up and down the hallway at night, however in a more placid cat could indicate a problem. Changes in your cats behavior could be caused by anything from feeling slightly off to resenting your favorite Aunt's visit.

A cat is dependant on stability, which means a change in their daily routine can disrupt a cat and cause unexplained cat behavior. For example, a cat could decide that they no longer like the litter they are using by refusing to use their litter box. It is in your cat's best interest to determine what will help make the situation stable again, which in this case, would be to find another type of litter that the cat likes.

So, in general, realize that cats behavior is as varied as human behavior. The more you know about what's baseline "normal" for your cat the easier it will be for you to pick up on behavioral variations that are trying to tell you something.
