The digestive systems of dogs and cats are similar in many ways. 1) Their digestive systems are acidic, 2) they do not have long intestines and 3) they are made to digest one type of protein at a time, not multiple types like man-made foods. Their digestive systems are made to eat raw meats, which are full of B-vitamins that are very important to good health. One report discussed the fact that pet foods have more food additives and artificial ingredients than processed foods do for humans. According to this article, this is the only way to make the foods desirable for the pet, due to the poor quality of its ingredients. Dogs, and their predecessors, did not hunt for vegetables but they are a vital part of a dog's diet. No, they didn't go hunting for veggies. The prey they killed provided the predigested vegetables needed for their nutrients. Give your dog or cat a carrot and you will see it again because their intestines cannot digest vegetables on their own. In the wild, a carnivore will search for the stomach contents when they make a kill and possible leave the rest. Dogs are notorious for eating non-stop as long as the food is in front of them. They do not chew like cats; they swallow whole. If your dog has a habit of eating disgusting things such as vomit, poop, dead carcasses, or rotten garbage, chances are they are looking for the missing nutrients that they are not getting from there food. A good diet should eliminate these habits. If you start feeding home-made foods, let them regulate themselves as they do in the wild. They will get on their own schedule, not on one that is imposed upon them. Dogs are not natural grazers. It's normal for them to eat until they are satisfied. Then they rest, digest and eliminate before the next feeding. This is just like in the wild and therefore is the natural way for them. When your dog is fed good home-made food, they will only eat when the time is right just like wild animals do. It's not necessary for a dog that is fed a well-balanced diet to drink as much water as dogs not fed well. This is because the food provides the necessary moisture content their bodies need. A good thing to remember is to always feed your pet as you would feed yourself. Organic home-made foods are best of course. along with good distilled water. Your dog, just like you, will decide what they like and don't like. Some dogs like more meat while others like more vegetables. Just don't feed your dog onions, chocolate, and fish as there are negative ramifications of eating these foods. If your dog is picky at first, add small amounts of the home-made food to the store-bought pet food until they are converted. Just as with your health, your pet's digestive health needs to be watched and improved whenever possible. Digestion problems are as common with pets as with humans.
